Secure Your Facebook Account in 10 Minutes
A short checklist, not a lecture
You do not need to be technical to secure a Facebook account. Ten focused minutes and the settings below will shut almost every common attack route.
1. Check where you are logged in
Go to Settings & privacy → Settings → Security and login. Review "Where you're logged in" and log out of any device you do not recognise — then change your password.
2. Change your password
Use a long, unique password (15+ characters). Do not reuse it anywhere else. A password manager makes this easy.
3. Turn on two-factor authentication
Under the same Security menu, enable Two-factor authentication. Prefer an authenticator app over SMS — codes sent by SMS can be intercepted by a stolen SIM.
4. Remove unfamiliar apps
Under Settings → Apps and websites, remove anything you do not recognise or no longer use. Each app is a potential door.
5. Set up alerts
Turn on login alerts so Facebook tells you whenever your account is accessed from an unknown device. You will know the moment something is wrong.
6. Update recovery info
Make sure the email and phone number on your account are yours, current, and controlled by you — they are how you get back in if you are ever locked out.
